Our fees and the work we do for you are not clouded in an air of mystery. We are direct about our fees and transparent in how we charge for our work.
In most cases, our fees are based on an hourly rate, which means that the total cost of the work will depend on the amount of work we will need to do. When you decide to retain our firm, you will be asked to deposit an initial retainer. These funds will be held in a special trust account and will only be accessed on your specific instructions or in accordance with a written retainer agreement in order to pay our account for work we have completed. As the case progresses, and the retainer funds are used, you would be asked to deposit further funds in trust to cover the amount of work we anticipate will be required in the near future. If at the end of the case there are any retainer funds left unused, they will be returned back to the client as per their instructions.
Lawyers: $265.00 to $450.00
Law Clerks: $125.00 – $165.00
We currently offer the following flat rates:
Simple Uncontested Divorce – $2,500.00 + HST (inclusive of ordinary court fees and disbursements).
DID YOU KNOW?
When trying to estimate your cost, a lawyer’s hourly rate only tells half the story. A lawyer’s efficiency or the amount of work a lawyer can do in a given hour, also factors into the equation.
While hourly rate of more experienced counsel is higher, certain complex tasks may actually take much less time and is therefore more cost effective. On the other hand, more routine tasks would not be as cost effective if done at higher hourly rate. It is more appropriate that an associate lawyer, an articling student, or a clerk complete such tasks.
The highest efficiency can only be achieved when experienced counsel are tasked with complex work requiring their expertise while the less complicated tasks are completed at lower hourly rates.
Only in a true Firm environment is it possible to maintain high efficiency. At Shulman Law Firm you don’t just hire one lawyer, our team is working on your side. This is yet another advantage you can leverage when hiring our firm.
