Everyone has a cause that is very special and dear to his or her heart. This passion can stem from personal experience, or an unfettered interest in a specific community or charity. It fuels you to be involved, to learn more and to help make your community a better place. For us, it’s the ultimate well being of our clients both inside and outside the courtroom.
The heart and stroke foundation has a mission of creating a world where Canadians live healthy lives free of heart disease by advocating for governments to invest in prevention programs, empowering Canadians to take control over their health, and investing in life saving research. As mentioned in our previous article, divorce hurts your heart in more ways then one. According to statistics Canada, the proportion of married couples has been steadily decreasing over the last 20 years with over 70,000 divorces granted in Canada in 2008. Despite the recent decrease, it is estimated that 41% of marriages will end in divorce before the 30th year of marriage. This means that the estimated 41% are in high risk of heart disease and stroke, since the two go hand in hand.

Matthew Dupre of Duke University conducted an 18 year long study on the matter, and found that women who went through a divorce at least once were 24% more likely to experience a heart attack, and that statistic almost triples with 2 or more divorces. Men are also at a higher risk of heart attacks after divorce:
“We looked at lifetime exposure to not only current marital status, but how many times someone has been divorced in the past. What we found was that repeated exposure to divorce put men and women, but particularly women, at higher risk of having a heart attack compared to those who were married.” –Matthew Dupre

We want to go above and beyond in making sure that not only can they rely on us for effective legal advice and representation, they can also rest assured knowing that we have their best interest in mind in their health as well. By participating in the Becel Ride for Heart, we hope to provide support for the heart and stroke foundation and evidently, ensure prevention of heart disease and stroke for our clients who are going through a divorce.
