Jesse Frank is a four year old child, described by his mother as being a “happy and lively little boy”. This previous sentence may not seem like an unusual one, as most four year old boys are generally considered to be energetic and jovial. However, Jesse struggles with a condition that most children do not have to cope with: Bilateral Sensori-Neural High Frequency Hearing Loss (SNHL).
SNHL is a hearing loss disease that is caused by a defect of the inner ear or auditory nerve, of which there is no cure or surgical procedure to reverse the damage. Jesse, unfortunately, was born with SNHL. It was very shortly after his birth that his mother was informed of his diagnosis, and told that her child would never be able to hear.
As one can imagine it was quite a blow for Svetlana (Jesse’s mother), to comprehend that her newly born child would struggle with communication for his entire life. What is more, the quest to assist Jesse to develop his communication abilities would become quite a costly battle. In order for Jesse to develop his communication abilities to the point where he is able to attend a mainstream school, he will need a combination of audio-visual therapy and speech language pathology.
