The Associate Lawyer is responsible for providing legal advice and representation to retained clients. The Associate plans and executes a strategy in collaboration with the Responsible Lawyer in order to optimize the outcome in favour of our client. This position requires a high degree of expertise, a strong focus on client relations and independence.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Interview potential clients to obtain all necessary information in order to provide consultation and sound legal advice in client’s proceedings;
  • Consult with the Responsible Lawyer on assigned matters to develop strategy and plan of action to best suit clients needs;
  • Examine and evaluate information to determine if events or processes comply with laws, regulations or standards;
  • Conduct legal research, interpret applicable laws and legislation, and identify relevant precedents;
  • Liaison with third parties, to communicate technical information, make presentations, confer with opposing counsel, and consult experts;
  • Formulate and draft court documents, including but not limited to Separation Agreements, Divorce Settlements and all other corresponding paperwork in the best interest, and under the direction, of the client;
  • Negotiate settlements on behalf of and under the direction of the client;
  • Maintain communication with clients to ensure that they are informed of the progress of their case, and are aware of their legal rights and how to employ them in their case;
  • Attend mediation, arbitration and other court sessions, including trial, on behalf of the client as necessary;
  • In collaboration with the Responsible Lawyer, prepare legal arguments, testimony and all proof required, prior to a court appearance;
  • Communicate regularly with the Client Relations – Accounts Receivable and Billing Specialist to ensure any substantial or anticipated upcoming work is reflected on Statement of Accounts and that client maintains a minimum retainer as required;
  • Review Statement of Accounts for all clients under their assignment, to ensure fair and accurate billing practices; propose recommended discounts for courtesy and discretion;
  • Coordinate the work and activities of assigned law clerk to ensure that essential tasks and deadlines are met;
  • Provide guidance and direction to the Law Clerks to ensure that all respective deadlines are met;
  • Take care to maintain up-to-date billing, with detailed dockets; review and submit all billing reports by respective deadlines.

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Publish a monthly article for our Firm website and various social media accounts, on a topic related to Family Law
  • Participate in special projects and assignments as needed and required

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree
  • L1 License, and in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience practicing Family Law
  • Bilingualism is considered an asset

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is sedentary in nature, no special requirements are necessary.
