What is common law marriage?

Common law relationships are those that do not involve a formal marriage ceremony. To be considered common law spouses for the purposes of being eligible for support from each other, you mustĀ either:

  • Live together continuously as a coupleĀ for at least three years; or
  • Live together continuously for any length of time as long you are in “a relationship of some permanence” and have a child together.
