Can child support be more than half my income?
No. In the Canadian family law system, child support is calculated in accordance with the federal Child Support Tables, which are designed to reflect the principles and formulas established in the federal Child Support Guidelines.
The Tables embody a mathematical formula that takes numerous factors into account, including your income, the number of children you have, and the applicable federal/provincial tax rules.
By putting your income information into the Tables, you will be given a monthly child support amount that takes into account your ability to pay. Although the outcome may differ slightly depending on where you live (since provincial/territorial tax rates can vary), this will never equal or exceed half of your income. The mathematical formula underpinning the Tables simply precludes it.
